Swarbrick Bus Clitheroe (24)

Cheap days out by bus this summer to Lancashire's museums

Parents looking for ideas to entertain the kids over the summer holidays are being urged to benefit from cheap bus fares to visit Lancashire County Council's museums.

To get a taste of the interconnected services that Lancashire offers,  County Councillor Rupert Swarbrick, cabinet member for highways and transport, caught the bus to visit Clitheroe Castle Museum.

He took advantage of the £2 flat fare to travel to Clitheroe interchange on the x bus service.

Councillor Swarbrick said: "There are some great offers on bus tickets running at the moment and we want local families to make the most of them in the summer holidays. When I travelled by bus myself to Clitheroe Castle museum, it was an easy way to travel, and a fantastic place for families to spend the day.

"For great value, hassle free journeys, I'd tell families to try the bus for a day out. It's a maximum of £2 for single bus journeys every day."

With the new weekender ticket, families can buy a day ticket on the bus on a Saturday for free travel on Sunday.* Kids under 5 always travel free.

There are six county council museums to explore across Lancashire, each offering fun-filled days out to keep the kids entertained in the summer holidays and beyond.

Simply visit the What's On page on the council's website to find plenty of exciting activities planned this summer, with most museums open until the October half term.

County Councillor Peter Buckley, cabinet member for community and cultural services, said: "This is a great partnership with our museums. In addition to cheap bus fares, we are proud to offer value passes to visit all our museums as many times as you like for a year."

The £20 Xplorer pass offers 12 months unlimited entry for two adults and two concessions, and kids go free to council-run museums.

* Not available on Blackpool Transport services except services 74 & 75. Buy any operator day ticket on a Saturday and get the equivalent for free travel on Sundays.

The fare offers are funded by government as part of the council's Bus Service Improvement Plan.

This £34m programme to make buses the best travel option for more people across the Lancashire County Council and Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council areas, following a successful bid by the councils and local bus operators to the Department for Transport to support their Bus Service Improvement Plans (BSIP).

This is in addition to the Department for Transport’s fares initiative of three months of single bus fares for no more than £2 for a single journey until 31 October 2023.

Other measures in the council's Bus Services Improvement Plan to be delivered from 2022 to 2025 include bus priority routes to make journeys quicker and more reliable and a number of bus service enhancements.
