Cottam Parkway station project moves into next phase
Preston's new Cottam Parkway railway station is set to move into its next phase after Lancashire County Council's Cabinet gave the green light for work to progress.
Cottam Parkway will provide a new rail connection for communities in Cottam, Lea and the wider Preston West growth area, supporting access to jobs, education and leisure opportunities across Lancashire and the North West.
The scheme includes a new railway station, a 250-space car park, a new access road linking the station to the Cottam Link Road, a bridge over the Lancaster Canal and improved walking and cycling links.
New artist impressions provide the latest view of how the station, access road, bridge and surrounding area could look once completed.
The decision means the project, which has a total estimated cost of £69.2m, can be added to the county council's capital programme, enabling work to move forward on the delivery of the project.
Construction of the new access road and bridge is expected to begin in 2027, with the station targeted to open in December 2030.
Councillor Warren Goldsworthy, cabinet member for Highways and Transport, said:
"This is a major step forward for a project that will improve transport connections for residents and support future growth in Preston.
Cottam Parkway will make it easier for people to travel by rail, improve access to jobs and services, and help support new housing and economic growth in the area.
A huge amount of work has gone into developing the scheme and securing the funding needed to make it happen.
This decision means we can now get on with the next phase of delivering the project."
County Councillor Brian Moore, cabinet member for Economic Development and Growth, said:
"Cottam Parkway is a major investment in Preston's future and will play a key role in supporting the area's continued growth.
"Strong transport connections are essential if we are to unlock new housing, attract investment and create opportunities for residents and businesses.
"This project has been many years in development, so it is extremely positive to see it move into the next phase of delivery.
"The scheme will support growth not only in Preston West, but across Central Lancashire, helping to strengthen the economy and improve connectivity for communities and businesses alike."
The decision follows recent confirmation of funding for the scheme, which has secured more than £64m of external and partner funding, including a £28.2m contribution from the Lancashire Combined County Authority. Lancashire County Council has also contributed £4.5m from previously approved county council funding sources.
