Councillors declare support for local radio and journalism

Councillors have declared their support for local radio and journalism and have vowed to continue to work with them to keep informing the public on important issues that affect them.

At Full Council on Thursday 13 July, councillors discussed the importance local media plays in helping the council to provide support for events and champion the very best of the county.

Councillors talked about the positive impact local media outlets have had in Lancashire, and what the council can do to help them maintain a strong presence in the communities they represent.

Phillippa Williamson, leader of Lancashire County Council, said: "The county council recognises the importance of the work of the media within Lancashire and wholeheartedly support the valuable work the local media undertakes and welcome the scrutiny they bring.

"Local journalists play a huge role in championing communities, ensuring they are informed and hold power to account.

"The media also works closely with us an many important issues that affect them.

"This collaboration is especially evident during times of crisis, such as flooding, major incidents and the Covid-19 pandemic, with the media playing a fundamental role in helping to inform the public throughout."

The discussion at Full Council came after a motion was submitted by County Councillor Charlie Edwards. Councillors unanimously approved the motion.

County Councillor Charlie Edwards said: "Our local media play an essential role in ensuring that the Council works as hard as it can to serve the residents of Lancashire.

"I am pleased that all councillors are united in their support of local journalism, and we are all thankful for the work they do to celebrate and champion what makes Lancashire great."

The council will now write to the Director-General of the BBC to highlight the positive impact BBC Radio Lancashire has on our community and ensure that it is adequately resourced to maintain its role as a source of trusted local news, information and entertainment.
