Fun Palace at Lancaster library 2023

Free activities on offer at Lancashire "Fun Palaces"

Robot races, sword fighting, and knitting a giant Preston North End scarf are among the activities taking place across the county this week.

Between Friday 4 and Sunday 6 October, 19 libraries and buildings are becoming "Fun Palaces".

The annual programme of events gets people of all ages involved using arts, crafts, science, technology and digital skills.

Last year more than 8,500 people attended the events across Lancashire.

Events are being planned at 16 of Lancashire's libraries along with Clitheroe Castle Museum, Gawthorpe Hall in Padiham and Lancashire Archives in Preston.

There is no need to book, and all the events and activities are free.

Ingol library is welcoming Preston North End Community and Education Trust who will get visitors to start work knitting a giant scarf.  The library's knitting group will be available to help those who cannot knit.

Once finished, the scarf will be carried around the pitch at Deepdale next year.

Another of the events is a Sense and Sensibility dance demonstration by Preston Folk Dance Club.

Ingol library officer Jennifer Ray said:

"Because we’re a library I tried to link it around a Jane Austen book. The dancers are coming in Regency costume to do a demonstration for 20 minutes and then other members can guide everyone else who wants to join in."

Fun Palaces 3 from Lancaster library 2023-2

Lancaster library's planned events include a crystal growing session with the chemistry department from Lancaster University and the chance to add to artwork of a map which shows what Lancaster looked like in the 1600's.

David Webster, the library officer at Lancaster Library, said:

"It's always hugely busy, there's something for everyone. There's no charge and everything is interactive."

County Councillor Peter Buckley, cabinet member for Community and Cultural Services, said:

"There is a huge variety of events planned across Lancashire and I would encourage people to join in the fun for free.

"I would also like to thank the staff and volunteers who have made these events possible as we celebrate another year of Fun Palaces popping up across the county."
