Grimsargh Skew Bridge project reaches crucial stage with upcoming piling works
Work to widen Grimsargh Skew Bridge enters a key phase next week, with major foundation works set to begin.
Piling works – installing deep structural supports into the ground – will begin on 13 October 2025 as part of the project to widen the bridge. This marks a significant milestone in the scheme, which aims to improve traffic flow on Preston Road for all vehicles and improve public transport reliability along this busy route.
Since construction began in June, notable progress has been made, including the demolition of the western footway and installation of a new mini-roundabout at the junction of Whittingham Lane and Preston Road.
However, investigations beneath the bridge revealed unexpected underground chambers, pipes, and foundations, requiring a redesign of the bridge section and diversion of drainage systems. These unforeseen issues led to delays while the drainage was rerouted and designs revised. With the additional groundwork now complete, piling to support the widened bridge structure is ready to begin.
To help ease congestion during the works, temporary traffic lights over the bridge are being manually operated between 7am and 7pm on weekdays, allowing real-time adjustments to improve traffic flow.
The project now aims for completion in spring 2026.
Cllr Warren Goldsworthy, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said:
"This is a vital scheme that will make a real difference to traffic flow and public transport reliability in Grimsargh and the surrounding area.
"We’re grateful to residents and road users for their patience while we carry out these improvements, and we’re working hard to keep disruption to a minimum."
The widening of Grimsargh Skew Bridge is part of Lancashire County Council’s Bus Service Improvement Plan, funded by government investment. Alongside the bridge works, improvements to junctions and pedestrian crossings will enhance safety and accessibility for residents.
