Haslingden Old Road repair project moves into construction phase
Work is now under way on site at Haslingden Old Road, marking a major step forward in reopening the route following the major landslip that forced its closure.
The B6236 Haslingden Old Road has been closed since early January 2025 after a landslip caused by heavy rain led to the collapse of a retaining wall and part of the carriageway.
Around 2,500 tonnes of earth were displaced by the landslip. Combined with challenging ground conditions, this has made the scheme a highly complex engineering project. Extensive surveys, design work and site preparation were needed before construction could begin.
A contractor was appointed in March this year following a robust tendering process, allowing the scheme to move through detailed design and into construction. Since then, enabling works have been completed and further surveys carried out to prepare the site.
The scheme will see a new reinforced earth retaining wall built to replace the damaged section, using an innovative approach typically used on large-scale infrastructure projects. This will provide a safe and durable long-term solution.
Access for pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained throughout the works.
County Councillor Warren Goldsworthy, cabinet member for Highways and Transport, said:
“It’s great to see work now under way at Haslingden Old Road, which marks a significant milestone in this complex repair project.
“We recognise that the closure has been frustrating for residents, businesses and road users, and we would like to thank people for their patience.
“This isn’t a straightforward repair, but we are focused on delivering a long-term solution that will allow the road to reopen safely.
“We know how important this route is for local communities and our focus remains on reopening it as soon as possible.”
The council’s aim remains to complete the works during 2026. However Haslingden Old Road presents a significant engineering challenge and timescales will remain subject to factors such as ground conditions and weather.
Diversions will remain in place for vehicles, with road users advised to continue following signed routes.
