Next phase of Colne bus station improvements to begin in August

Work on the next phase of improvements to Colne town centre will begin in August, following the completion of a major upgrade to the bus station earlier this year.

Work is expected to begin on 17 August and should take around 12 weeks.

The upcoming work follows the completion of a major refurbishment of Colne bus station earlier this year, which has created a modern, more accessible hub for passengers with new shelters, real-time information and improved facilities.

The old clock has also been replaced, marking a new chapter for the station.

Phase two of the scheme will focus on improving how buses and traffic move through the town centre, making journeys quicker, safer and more reliable.

This will include changes to allow buses to access the station from all directions, relocating stops from Market Street into the bus station, and introducing new traffic signals and pedestrian crossings to improve safety and accessibility.

Once complete, all bus services will operate from the station, bringing routes together in one place and making it easier for passengers to change services and plan their journeys.

County Councillor John Clemson, lead member for Highways and Transport at Lancashire County Council, said:

“Passengers in Colne are already benefiting from the newly upgraded bus station, and we’re now moving into the next phase of this important scheme.

“The next phase will improve traffic flow through the town centre and allow buses to access the station from all directions, helping to make services more reliable and easier to use.

“These improvements build on our investment to make a real difference to how people travel in and around Colne and support greater use of public transport."

Councillor Asjad Mahmood, leader of Pendle Borough Council, said:

"These improvements are helping to create a better connected, safer and more accessible town centre for residents, visitors and businesses alike.

“The new bus station makes it easier for people to travel around Pendle and beyond, while the wider traffic and pedestrian improvements support our ambitions to create a thriving and welcoming town centre.”

The Colne Bus Service Improvement Plan scheme is being delivered by Lancashire County Council, working with Pendle Borough Council, through its Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP). The project also aligns with Pendle Borough Council’s wider town centre regeneration ambitions.

The improvements have been made been possible thanks to funding from HM Government’s Bus Service Improvement Plan fund.
