Next steps taken on key strategy to help nature's recovery across Lancashire
The next steps are being taken on the creation of a key strategy to protect and restore species and habitats and aid nature's recovery across Lancashire.
Local Nature Recovery Strategies (LNRSs) are being developed across the country as part of a National Nature Recovery Network. Lancashire County Council is leading the preparation of the county's own Strategy.
The Strategy will help also strive to provide wider benefits like cleaner air and water, reducing flood risk and improving access to nature and the wellbeing benefits that this can bring.
A survey was held in 2024 to inform the development of the LNRS. Members of the public shared their experiences and views about the current state of the county's nature, the biggest local environmental issues, hopes for the future and where nature’s recovery should be prioritised. The feedback provided, alongside input from other stakeholders and experts, was used to inform the strategy and shape the future of nature across the county, protecting it for future generations.
As the lead authority, Lancashire County Council must ensure that the 16 supporting authorities - including district councils and Natural England – are consulted on and agree the current draft of the LNRS before proceeding to public consultation.
At Lancashire County Council’s next Cabinet meeting on Thursday, 6 February, Councillors will be asked to approve progressing to this important next stage in agreeing a LNRS for Lancashire.
Councillor Shaun Turner, cabinet member for Environment and Climate Change said: “The Local Nature Recovery Strategy sets out our priorities and opportunities to drive the recovery of nature and provide wider benefits for the environment and the people of Lancashire.
"To improve and protect nature, improve our biodiversity and fight against climate change, we will be sharing the current draft with our partners and then taking to wider public consultation to ensure that everyone has had their say.”
