Repair efforts continue on Haslingden Old Road following huge landslip

The B6236 Haslingden Old Road, which connects Rossendale with Hyndburn, has been closed since the start of the New Year following a massive landslip during heavy rain. The landslip led to a wall supporting the road and one lane of the carriageway to collapse.

Rebuilding the supporting wall and opening the road is a priority for the council, with work estimated to cost up to £3m, which has been secured.

Repairing the highway presents several significant engineering challenges, in part due to the instability of the underlying ground and dealing with around 2500 metric tonnes of earth.

The current timeline is for repair works to start on site February 2026, with a view to the road opening in summer 2026.

There are a number of reasons why work cannot start until then. Preparatory work is in progress with proposals being drawn up to invite tenders for the design and build of the project. Proposals for progressing with procurement will then go before the county council's cabinet. Various surveys also need to be undertaken and reviewed.

To capture the scale of the project, a drone was recently deployed around the site, with some of that footage now being released to the public.

Cllr Warren Goldsworthy, cabinet member for Highways and Transport, said:

"It's a real priority to get this road fully repaired and back open again.

"However, the scale of the damage and complexity of the terrain presents major engineering challenges.

"This isn't a quick fix but we're well on with the job and are working toward a full reconstruction of the retaining wall and highway.”
