Rolling road closures in place when Lloyds Tour of Britain Women races through Lancashire

The arrival of the Lloyds Tour of Britain Women marks a historic first for Lancashire – and we want to make sure people can enjoy the event safely.

The men's race has been through Lancashire before, and now stage two of the women's race will pass through our county for the first time on Thursday 20th August.

Some of the world's top cyclists will set off from Clitheroe at 11:30am, passing through more than 70 miles of our towns and villages, before a sprint to the finish next to Blackpool's iconic Mirror Ball.

To ensure everyone's safety, there will be a number of road closures in place at the start and finish of the route.

There will also be rolling road closures when riders head through towns and villages including Chatburn, Slaidburn, Whalley, Longridge, Goosnargh and Lytham St Annes.

Most roads will only be affected for around 30 to 40 minutes as the race passes through, however as this is a live event, some closures may need to be extended slightly.

We are asking people to allow extra time for journeys and plan ahead.

Emergency vehicle access will be maintained throughout the event.

Stewards will also ensure access for people walking in to Clitheroe Grammar School as some students will be collecting their GCSE results on Thursday.

County Councillor Stephen Atkinson, Leader of Lancashire County Council, said:

"We're expecting lots of people to come out to support the riders as they take on some of Lancashire's most challenging climbs and pass through your hometown or village.

"This is a huge event, there has been a lot of planning involved and it's necessary to close roads to make sure both riders and spectators are safe while the event is here.

"Please plan ahead if you are coming to enjoy the race and spend time exploring the county once the riders have passed by. This is a fantastic opportunity to see sporting history on our doorstep and to support Lancashire businesses."

Notes to editors

A full list of road closures is below, however please be advised that as this is a live event, the timings should be treated as an indication and may need to be extended slightly.
