Sunday bus fares just £1 from this weekend

A big boost for bus passengers in Lancashire begins this weekend, with adult fares on all Sunday services reduced to just £1.

The bargain fare for single adult journeys is being brought in as part of a £7.025m package of improvements recently agreed by Lancashire County Council's cabinet thanks to new funding from HM Government in support of its Bus Service Improvement Plan.

The new Sunday and bank holiday offer which will operate throughout the day is an extension of the £1 evening fare already available within Lancashire. It replaces the existing 'Buy Saturday, Get Sunday Free' offer also known as the Weekender Ticket.

County Councillor Scott Smith, Lancashire County Council lead member for highways and active travel, said:

"There's no better time to begin using the bus than the coming bank holiday, with many Lancashire residents already taking advantage of the opportunity to travel for just £1 after 7pm.

"By extending the £1 fare to also cover Sundays we're making it cheaper and more convenient than ever to explore all the great things Lancashire has to offer this summer, while travelling sustainably.

"This significant investment builds upon the enhancements to services we've already introduced thanks to the funding received from the Department for Transport in support of our Bus Service Improvement Plan, which is making buses more frequent, reliable and easier to use."

A further opportunity to use the bus to explore more begins from this Sunday (26 May) with the introduction of the Rivington 125R service operated by Stagecoach which will, for the first time, link Chorley to Rivington to provide improved travel options for Lancashire residents. The service will also serve Horwich Parkway and Middlebrook Retail and Leisure Park.

The new service will operate every Sunday and bank holiday throughout the summer/autumn months until Sunday 3 November 2024. It is being funded in partnership through Lancashire County Council's allocation of HM Government's Bus Service Improvement Plan Phase 2 funding, South East Lancashire Community Rail Partnership, Community Rail Network, Cross Country Trains, Horwich Town Council, and Transport for Greater Manchester.
