Traffic calming agreed for key Ormskirk route

A key route in Ormskirk is due to be made safer for cyclists after traffic calming measures have been agreed by Lancashire County Council's cabinet.

The improvements aim to encourage more people to use their bikes when visiting Edge Hill University, or for any short journey east of the town centre.

It will see a series of road humps introduced within the 20mph speed limit on Ruff Lane between the junction with Knowsley Road, and Beech Meadow to the east of the university.

The scheme is designed to complement major improvements already underway as part of the Ormskirk Eastern Gateway Project, which will make it easier for people to access the town centre by walking, cycling, and using public transport, with a particular focus on improving links between the railway station, the bus station, and Edge Hill University.

A recent report to the county council's cabinet outlined feedback received in response to public consultation on the proposals held in May and June.

County Councillor Charlie Edwards, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: "Ruff Lane links Ormskirk town centre to the rear of Edge Hill University and is the safest route for most people making this journey by bike, away from the main traffic on St Helen's Road.

"At the same time, vehicle speeds on Ruff Lane often considerably exceed the 20mph speed limit. These measures are designed to keep vehicle speeds within the 20mph limit, make cycling safer, and encourage anyone who is thinking of making the switch to cycling for their regular journeys in this area to give it a go.

"In combination with the improvements being made as part of the Ormskirk Eastern Gateway Project, this will make a real difference to people's travel choices and help to make Ormskirk an even better place to live, work and do business."
