Two new SEN units to be created in Nelson and Burnley
Two new Special Educational Needs (SEN) units will be created in East Lancashire after the county council’s cabinet approved the plans.
Cabinet approved proposals to create new SEN Units within Barrowford Primary School, Nelson and Brunshaw Primary School, Burnley, at their meeting on Thursday 6 June, after considering the results of two formal consultation held earlier this year.
In relation to Barrowford Primary School, a formal consultation took place between 24 January 2024 and 28 February 2024. Concerns raised included an increase in traffic and parking in the area.
A formal consultation was carried out between 22 April 2024 and 21 May 2024 in relation to Brunshaw Primary School, with no responses received.
Jacqui Old, Executive Director of Education and Children's Services, Lancashire County Council, said:
"The demand for specialist provision in Lancashire continues to increase and we are working hard to create and enhance existing provision so that we can fulfil our statutory duties.
"Proposals to create SEN Units at Barrowford Primary School and Brunshaw Primary School will mean more children will get the support they need.
"These actions are part of a wider ongoing strategy to boost provision across the county and we remain dedicated to this goal."
