Work on major bus station upgrade in Colne town centre to begin in the New Year
Work on a major improvement scheme in Colne town centre – designed to enhance public transport access and improve traffic flow – is set to begin in the New Year.
The first phase of the scheme will focus on upgrading Colne bus station, including increasing the number of bays from three to five, installing new shelters with real-time passenger information, and improving pedestrian access.
These changes will allow the station to serve all bus routes, centralising services that currently operate from separate stops on Market Street.
To support this, Craddock Road will be converted to two-way traffic, enabling buses to access the station from all directions. This change is a key element of the wider plan to improve connectivity and reduce journey times.
Construction will take place in two phases, with the first phase set to start in January 2026.
A number of further improvements are also being proposed for the second phase, with the public being consulted on a series of traffic regulation orders, including:
- Intelligent traffic signals at the junction of Market Street, Skipton Road, Keighley Road and Craddock Road.
- A new puffin crossing on Market Street.
- A 7.5-tonne weight limit on Windy Bank to prevent use by larger vehicles.
- Relocation of bus stops from Market Street to the bus station, with the area repurposed for loading and evening parking.
The scheme also includes pedestrian-friendly upgrades, such as a new signal-controlled crossing near the market and improved access to the bus station via Craddock Road.
These works form part of Lancashire’s Bus Service Improvement Plan, designed to make bus travel quicker, more reliable, and more convenient. The improvements also align with Pendle Council’s wider regeneration plans, including future leisure development near the bus station.
County Councillor Warren Goldsworthy, cabinet member for Highways and Transport, said:
“These improvements will make a real difference to how people travel in and around Colne and support Pendle’s wider regeneration ambitions.
"One of the barriers to people choosing the bus is that sometimes they find the system of routes, timetables and fares difficult to understand. By centralising Colne's services at the upgraded station, we’re making it easier and more convenient for people to use the bus.
"The changes to roads will improve pedestrian access, as well as traffic flow through the town centre.
"These improvements are one of a number of bus priority measures being delivered as part of Lancashire's Bus Service Improvement Plan, to improve infrastructure and highways, making journeys quicker, more convenient, and more reliable."
